The concept began in 2004, when editor Jean Libby (then a college U.S, History Instructor, now retired from teaching) was challenged by a group of journalists and community leaders in San Jose, California, to change the textbooks in public schools in their portrayal of Vietnamese Americans and the Vietnam War history to a more accurate and truthful representation of the people and their history.
A seminar on Vietnamese American Achievement was organized by Jean Libby, Diem Truong, T. Van Do, and others which featured the first "American" exhibit of the photos of Nguyen Ngoc Hanh. The keynote speaker was Nguyen Chi Thien, dissident poet. Sponsors of the event included the National Congress of Vietnamese Americans and the California History Center at De Anza College.
A blog called VietAm Review continues the seminar focus of Vietnamese American Achievement through announcement of events around the country. Special attention is paid to the activities of Vietnamese Americans in obtaining Freedom and Democracy for Vietnam, and the successful inclusion of elected representatives in Congress in this mission.
